Virginia Patton, best known for her role in It's a Wonderful Life, died at the age of 97

The American businesswoman was the last adult star of the 1946 comedy film It's a Wonderful Life to survive

She was confirmed to have died on August 18 at an assisted living facility in Albany, Georgia

The Mathews Funeral Home announced her death and included it in their obituaries

In the classic film, Patton played Jimmy Stewart's sister-in-law, Ruth Dakin Bailey

 Her co-star Karolyn Grimes, who played a child actor in the film, posted a heartfelt tribute on her Facebook page

She wrote: ‘We have another angel! Virginia Patton Moss. She is now with her beloved Cruse. She will be missed!’

Patton was born on June 25, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio

She grew up in Portland, Oregon, where she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942 before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career
