But, on the eve of the US Open, Swiatek had another priority: summoning the courage to meet Serena Williams, a formidable champion who made Swiatek feel like “a kindergarten kid just looking at her.”
Many people came from far and wide to see Serena — no last name required, befitting someone who is as much an icon as a superstar athlete — play on Monday, hoping for an autograph, a glimpse of her practising, or simply the chance to breathe the same Flushing Meadows air as her.
As thousands waited in lines to enter the tournament grounds hours before her match, then headed to smaller courts for earlier action, or simply walked around, waiting and wading in the palpable excitement, no one present knew how many more chances there would be for any of it. People came to watch, or think about watching, Serena Williams swing her racket to 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other person in the professional era of tennis, which began in 1968, because she has stated that she is ready to move on from her playing days.

Swiatek shared a photo of herself with Williams on her social media accounts on Sunday: Swiatek tweeted, “This is the highlight of my day.” “Congratulations @serenawilliams on your incredible journey and legendary career.” I admire everything you’ve done for our sport.”
Many were there to honour her and express gratitude for everything she’s done on and off the court.
Williams’ first-round match against Danka Kovinic was scheduled to begin shortly after 7 p.m. in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
