Panthers’ backup quarterback Sam Darnold and kicker Zane Gonzalez were both taken off the field during Carolina’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Friday night.
Sam Darnold injury
Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold was carted off the field in the third quarter of the Panthers’ preseason finale against the visiting Buffalo Bills on Friday after suffering a left ankle injury.
Darnold sprained his left ankle after Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer collided with him as he released the ball. Darnold will have an MRI on Saturday, according to Panthers coach Matt Rhule, but the team is fairly certain he does not have a fracture.
A high ankle sprain is typically an injury that keeps players out for four to six weeks.
“Sam’s a tough kid, and he usually returns pretty quickly,” Rhule explained.

When asked if the Panthers would consider bringing Cam Newton back for a third stint, Rhule said nothing is off the table. Rhule said he enjoyed coaching Newton last year and regards him as a true professional.
Several Panthers players rushed over to help Darnold onto the cart. Darnold’s friend, Bills quarterback Josh Allen, also ran onto the field to encourage him.
The injury ends a preseason in which if you remember Darnold lost a battle for the Panthers’ and starting job to Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield started the first four offensive series for Carolina on Friday, throwing two touchdown passes. He completed nine of fifteen passes for 89 yards.
The Panthers have lost a quarterback to injury in a preseason game for the second week in a row.
Zane Gonzalez injury
Darnold’s injury occurred shortly after Gonzalez was carted to the locker room with a groyne injury. Gonzalez was injured while warming up on the wet field’s sideline. On Darnold’s touchdown, punter John Hekker converted the PAT.
The extent of Gonzalez’s injury was unknown to Rhule.
