Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest: Nottingham Forest was greeted harshly upon their return to the Premier League. Forest was thoroughly dominated by an ambitious Newcastle United, who deserved their 2-0 opening day win in their return to the English topflight after more than 23 years away.
The decisive goals in the second half came from two outstanding performances by Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson. Schar stepped up from his defensive position to fire an angled blast into the top right corner of the goal, and Callum Wilson curled in a cross from the box for the game’s second goal.
As the game progressed, the disparity in quality and seasoning between the two teams became clear. Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle controlled the midfield, Allan Saint-Maximin ran circles around defenders, and Miguel Almiron made lung-busting runs in behind all game. Joelinton and Joe Willock provided hard work and physicality in midfield, and captain Kieran Trippier was effective from right back. They didn’t even need star center-back signing Sven Botman, who came on late in the game.
Forest could never seize control of the midfield and had few extended periods of possession as their forwards struggled to hold up the ball and relieve some of the pressure on their team. Jesse Lingard made a quiet debut for his new club, while newcomer Orel Mangala and record signing Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench but couldn’t provide much of a spark.
Nottingham Forest will look to regroup when they host West Ham on Sunday, while Newcastle will travel to Brighton next Saturday, hoping to build on their strong start and prove they are serious about competing in 2022/23.
