Daniil Medvedev will return to competitive activity knowing that he must win multiple events throughout the remainder of the 2022 season if he wants to be the year-end world No. 1.

The defending US Open champion has not competed since the Mallorca Championships in June due to the All England Tennis Club and Lawn Tennis Association’s decision to exclude Russian and Belarusian players from playing following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Medvedev, on the other hand, will enter the Los Cabos Open this week still securely atop the ATP Rankings, as no points were granted at Wimbledon due to the ban on Russian and Belarussian players.

Prior to the event, the world No. 1 has been practising with Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom.

“It’s always different, but winning matches is definitely the most important,” he remarked. “Every opponent can be difficult, so the more matches you win, the more confidence you have, the more you start feeling your game, what you have to do better, and that’s what I’m going to try to accomplish here in Los Cabos.”

Following this week’s trip to Mexico, Medvedev will return to Toronto to defend his Canadian Open title, while also competing in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, where he reached the semi-finals last year. His North American tour will come to a finish on August 29 when he defends his US Open title at Flushing Meadows.
