Valencia: Only three days after the Spanish youngster won the US Open, top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz will miss the opening round of the Davis Cup Finals on Wednesday.
Alcaraz landed in Valencia the day before Spain’s group stage match against Serbia.
The 19-year-old Alcaraz became the youngest man to hold the top spot in the ATP computerised rankings since they were first created in 1973 with his victory over Casper Ruud in the US Open final on Sunday.
On Wednesday, Spain will field Albert Ramos Vinolas and Roberto Bautista Agut in the singles matchups and Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martnez in the doubles.
Granollers and Bautista Agut competed on Spain’s Davis Cup-winning squad in 2019.
Spain will compete in Group B matches against Canada on Friday and South Korea on Sunday after playing Serbia, which is missing Novak Djokovic. The quarterfinals, which will be held in November at Málaga in southern Spain, will include the top two teams from each of the four groups.
Group games are also being held in Bologna, Italy; Hamburg, Germany; and Glasgow, Scotland.
