2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2: The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 does not have a moniker inspired by prehistoric predators. It also lacks the 700-plus horsepower of the Hellcat-powered Ram 1500 TRX and the 37-inch Tyres of the high-flying Ford F-150 Raptor. The Chevrolet doesn’t even have 35-inch Tyres.
The first-generation Silverado ZR2 does have a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 engine, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory off-road Tyres, and advanced Multimatic spool-valve dampers. All of these features combine to make it the bow-tie brand’s most formidable off-roader, even if its stat sheet is unlikely to impress anyone yearning for a Raptor or TRX. Read this article for more detailed information.

Performance, Engine, and Transmission
The ZR2’s bulging hood houses the same naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 found in the regular Silverado 1500. The engine produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and it is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Every ZR2 comes standard with four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, and electronic-locking front and rear differentials. A specially tuned suspension with high-performance spool-valve dampers stabilises the truck’s 18-inch wheels, which are shod with gnarly 33-inch off-road tyres.
The underside of the truck is protected by a unique skid-plate package, and Chevy claims the ZR2’s high-mounted steel bumper provides a 31.8-degree approach angle, which is more than what’s available on similarly lifted Silverado Trail Boss models. We have a better appreciation for the Zr2’s capabilities now that we’ve driven it around Joshua Tree State Park, as well as its smaller width compared to the F-150 Raptor and Ram TRX, which makes the Chevy easier to manoeuvre on tight trails.
2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2
HIGHS
The ultimate off-road Silverado 1500, with a smoother ride than non-ZR2 variants and a smaller turning radius than the Raptor and TRX.
LOWS
Electronic shift lever is inconvenient, fuel economy ratings are unimpressive, and Raptor and TRX offer larger off-road Tyres.
VERDICT
The ZR2 isn’t as extreme as the Raptor or TRX, but it’s more practical and capable half-ton Silverado.
