The Pentagon has temporarily halted F-35 fighter jet deliveries after learning from the manufacturer that a Chinese made alloy was used in a component of the stealth fighter jet, in violation of federal defence acquisition rules.
A magnet containing the alloy used in the integrated power package, according to the Pentagon, posed no security risk.
“We have confirmed that the magnet does not transmit information or harm the aircraft’s integrity,” said Defense Department spokesperson Ruemaere. “There are no performance, quality, safety, or security risks associated with this issue, and flight operations for the F-35 in-service fleet will continue as usual.”
Lockheed Martin, according to the Pentagon, has already found a substitute source of the alloy for future deliveries.
The company voluntarily reported the noncompliance, and an investigation is underway to determine how it occurred. The Pentagon did not specify how many planes were delayed or how many were equipped with the Chinese alloy. The company intends to deliver up to 153 F-35s by 2022, with 88 already delivered.

F-35 fighter jet
The F-35 is one of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft. The US operates hundreds of the jets, which come in three variants: conventional take-off and landing F-35As for the Air Force, vertically landing F-35Bs for the Marine Corps, and aircraft carrier-capable F-35Cs.
“We are working with our partners and the Department of Defense to ensure that contracts are followed throughout the supply chain. The magnet cannot see or access any sensitive programme information. The F-35 remains safe to fly, and we are working with the Department of Defense to resolve the issue as soon as possible so that deliveries can resume.” According to a press release from Lockheed Martin. The alloy is used in Honeywell’s Lockheed Martin system.
